River Ride

Crossing the Hérault by Bike

For an original and refreshing outing, choose the crossing of the Hérault by bike with the famous Mimi Passeur. This trip of about 22 km offers you the chance to combine cycling and riverboat for half a day. The departure is from the Mail de Rochelongue, heading to Le Grau d’Agde via the bike path (about 30 minutes). Once there, board the Mimi Passeur with your bike to cross the Hérault in 5 minutes. The crossing is very affordable: €1.5 per person + €1 per bike (indicative rates 2021). After disembarking at La Tamarissière, continue your ride along the natural side of the Hérault.

The route then leads you to the historic center of Agde, crossing the canal via the D912. Admire the cobbled streets, monuments, and the typical atmosphere of this town rich in history. The return trip goes along the other bank of the Hérault, on the Grau d’Agde side, until the Cap d’Agde.

This is a rich, varied, and accessible outing for all, ideal to discover the heritage of Agde differently. The Mimi Passeur accepts bikes daily from 9 AM, with frequent crossings (until midnight in summer). An unmissable experience not to be missed during your stay in Agde with La Balade des Gens Heureux.

Bike Ride to Sète

Looking for a great cycling adventure? Start from the Mail de Rochelongue and follow the bike path towards Sète. The route begins at the entrance of the Cap d’Agde naturist village, then runs along the coastline to Marseillan Plage. It’s a pleasant, safe ride, perfect for a day out cycling.

For the more motivated, continue on to Sète, between sea, nature, and an authentic port. This trip offers between 50 and 70 km of cycling pleasure, depending on the route you choose. You’ll encounter beautiful landscapes along the coast, ideal for photo stops or picnics.

The return can be done via the greenway from Mèze, passing along the banks of the Étang de Thau. It’s a lovely loop accessible for regular cyclists. Don’t forget to equip yourself well and bring water. La Balade des Gens Heureux recommends the best bikes for this kind of trip!

Canal du Midi Circuit from Agde

From Agde, follow the peaceful banks of the Canal du Midi for a charming and tranquil bike ride. This flat and safe route is ideal for all levels, whether alone, as a couple, or with family. You’ll cycle in the shade of plane trees, alongside the water and the typical locks of this UNESCO World Heritage site.

L'écluse ronde

The round lock is the only circular-shaped lock on the canal; it was built in 1676 using volcanic stones (a little fun fact: at that time, a large part of the town was constructed with this material).

Thanks to its design, it can connect to three different water levels: the upper level leads to the Hérault River, the middle level to Béziers, and the lowest to Agde. The round lock is located 2 km from the center of Agde and is easily accessible by bike.

Les ouvrages du Libron

The Libron works are located in Vias, 9 km from the center of Agde. In this village flows a small stream called the Libron, which used to cause devastating floods during heavy rains.

To address flooding and torrential floods, Urbain Maguès, a great 19th-century engineer, designed this ingenious system to divert water to the Mediterranean while maintaining the same navigation system.

Located 9 km from the center of Agde, the Libron works offer a perfect short outing if you’re not looking for a full day of effort.

If you want to extend the visit, you can also visit the Portiragnes lock for a bit of freshness. It is 10 km from the Libron works and, although quite basic, remains a pleasant spot.

Le phare des Onglous

The Onglous Lighthouse marks the separation between the Canal du Midi and the Thau Lagoon. Its port is intended for barges arriving via the Canal.
